{"id":736,"date":"2011-05-10T12:42:56","date_gmt":"2011-05-10T10:42:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/premesso.newcontrarian.com\/?p=736"},"modified":"2011-05-10T12:42:56","modified_gmt":"2011-05-10T10:42:56","slug":"muslim-prayer-at-duomo-chinese-on-sarpi-stories-behind-images","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/premesso.com\/?p=736","title":{"rendered":"Duomo &#038; Sarpi: stories behind images"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to provide a little context for Magdi&#8217;s provocative posters, some reading from the archives in order to illuminate exactly what happened:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-747\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/premesso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/FOTOENG_620.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-747\" src=\"http:\/\/premesso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/FOTOENG_620-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;What can be more excellent than prayer?&quot;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The praying at piazza Duomo was connected to protests against the Gaza War and happened on January 3, 2009.\u00a0 Organizers of the protests say that the prayer was spontaneous.\u00a0 Coverage in the <em>Washington Post<\/em> is <a title=\"WaPo on prayers at piazza duomo 1.2009\" href=\"http:\/\/onfaith.washingtonpost.com\/postglobal\/sais\/nexteurope\/2009\/02\/the_gaza_wars_italian_front.html#more\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 There was no violence, and the Archibishop of Milan refused to condemn the prayers. As the <a title=\"guardian on jan 3 prayers at duomo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2009\/jan\/09\/muslim-prayers-milan-cathedral\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Guardian<\/em> reported<\/a>, the Muslim community actually met with the\u00a0archbishop\u00a0and apologized for the prayers.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, the first amendment to the\u00a0constitution\u00a0guarantees <a title=\"right to petition: us constitution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Right_to_petition_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">right to petition<\/a>, or freedom of public assembly.\u00a0 In Europe, it is guaranteed by <a title=\"article 11\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Article_11_ECHR\" target=\"_blank\">article 11 <\/a>of the European Convention on Human Rights, if one believes in the authority of European law.<\/p>\n<p>The riots along via Sarpi on April 12, 2007 started when city authorities in Milan began applying fines to the many wholesalers who operated along the street.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-748\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/premesso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/chinami2_320x209shkl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-748\" src=\"http:\/\/premesso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/chinami2_320x209shkl-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Every tree and every blade of grass appears to be enemy soldiers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Milan\u2019s administration has taken care of this issue recently by <a title=\"via sarpi si \u00e8 fatta bella\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cantieresarpi.it\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">completely refurbishing the street<\/a>, and making it pedestrian-only.\u00a0 Without cars and vans, and with bikes replacing pushcarts, the neighborhood is much more livable now &#8212; but arguably one effect the improvements had was to make it more difficult for wholesalers there, who simply moved their operations to side streets.<\/p>\n<p>Elisabeth Rosenthal and Elisabetta Povoledo <a title=\"Sarpi - NYT - Povoledo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/04\/26\/world\/europe\/26iht-italy.4.5457480.html?pagewanted=1&amp;sq=sarpi&amp;st=cse&amp;scp=2\" target=\"_blank\">reported on this for the <em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>, as did the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/europe\/6550725.stm\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the story, the Chinese rallied around the flag for lack of a better symbol. Since some commentators have pointed out that laws in Italy are often unfairly applied, I wanted to highlight the penultimate paragraph:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some experts say that the Chinese in Milan have been unfairly singled out by the authorities, and that the authorities have been considerably more lax with native Italians.
