{"id":539,"date":"2011-02-17T14:36:26","date_gmt":"2011-02-17T13:36:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/premesso.newcontrarian.com\/?p=539"},"modified":"2011-02-17T14:36:26","modified_gmt":"2011-02-17T13:36:26","slug":"berlusconis-steganography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/premesso.com\/?p=539","title":{"rendered":"Berlusconi&#8217;s Steganography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the <a title=\"FT on Berlusconi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/547b63b8-38ef-11e0-b0f6-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1E7cI8NB7\" target=\"_blank\">FT<\/a> ran the following photo, shot by AP photographer Riccardo de Luca, above-the-fold in its Europe edition. \u00a0The unspoken message is clear: you&#8217;re old, and it&#8217;s time to leave.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_540\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-540\" style=\"width: 238px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/premesso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/28821621.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-540\" src=\"http:\/\/premesso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/28821621-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tired<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even in a <a title=\"Berlusconi in Reuters video\" href=\"http:\/\/video.nytimes.com\/video\/2011\/02\/09\/world\/europe\/1248069624029\/berlusconi-decries-sex-charges.html?ref=europe\" target=\"_blank\">recent broadcast<\/a>, Berlusconi seems old and tired &#8212; his hair obviously dyed, the wrinkles showing. \u00a0My personal distaste for him notwithstanding, I was surprised to see chinks in the Cav&#8217;s armor. \u00a0He maintains an almost fanatical control of his image in press &#8212; which is not hard when one owns or controls most of it &#8212; but some quick searches turned up <a title=\"Youthful Berlusca'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.it\/images?q=giovane+berlsconi&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;source=og&amp;sa=N&amp;hl=it&amp;tab=wi&amp;biw=1699&amp;bih=835\" target=\"_blank\">some amusing old photos<\/a>. \u00a0Most are not worth commenting on, unless you&#8217;re really curious about how he looked with a <a title=\"Foppish SB\" href=\"http:\/\/forsenontuttisannoche.ilcannocchiale.it\/mediamanager\/sys.user\/140509\/il-giovane-silvio-berlusconi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">full head of hair<\/a>, except one.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 636px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2010\/09\/20\/article-1313648-0B453C3E000005DC-85_636x607.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2010\/09\/20\/article-1313648-0B453C3E000005DC-85_636x607.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"607\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Small and powerful<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a title=\"anni di piombo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Years_of_lead_(Italy)\" target=\"_blank\">Italy in the 1970s<\/a> was an incredibly dangerous place where kidnappings &#8212; especially of wealthy industrialists and their families &#8212; by the Mafia were common. \u00a0This photo is a fascinating <em>scorchio<\/em> &#8212; a snapshot &#8212; into the mind of the man who would be king, and who knew as much, three decades ago. \u00a0The pistol on the desk is surely no accident, especially if, as the <a title=\"DM on SB\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1313648\/Unseen-Seventies-photo-Silvio-Berlusconi-armed-357-Magnum.html#ixzz10LLCJURm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Daily Mail<\/em> reports<\/a>, he spent two hours on the photoshoot. \u00a0It&#8217;s intriguing to wonder what it means, especially given the claim that he packed heat in event of a Mafia kidnapping.<\/p>\n<p>The gun is there, but it is on the table. \u00a0It is not pointed at anyone, and it is not on his person &#8212; a tacit signal in a carefully-coded language that Berlusconi is a man with whom the syndicates could truck with, rather just extract a one-time payment from by dint of force.<\/p>\n<p>Pure speculation &#8212; but what is certain is that the year after this photo was taken Berlusconi would found Fininvest and join Propaganda 2. \u00a0Over the next five years, he would earn 113 billion lire, \u20ac58.4 million\u00a0in today&#8217;s currency, in transactions obscured by &#8220;endless financial\u00a0Chinese\u00a0boxes&#8230;entirely unfathomable to outsiders&#8221; and &#8220;bizarre businesses&#8230;set up under <em>prestanomi <\/em>(nicknamed accounts with dummy holders),&#8221; in the <a title=\"TJ Dark Heart SB quote\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/reader\/0865477248?_encoding=UTF8&amp;query=chinese\" target=\"_blank\">words of Tobias Jones<\/a>. \u00a0Around the same time, he hired <a title=\"Manago wiki\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vittorio_Mangano\" target=\"_blank\">Vittorio Manago<\/a> from Sicily to work as a groundsman at <a title=\"Arcore wiki\" href=\"http:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Villa_San_Martino_(edificio)\" target=\"_blank\">Arcore<\/a>, who died a decade ago in prison doing time for a double murder and drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Suspicion, as the saying goes, is the antechamber of truth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the FT ran the following photo, shot by AP photographer Riccardo de Luca, above-the-fold in its Europe edition. \u00a0The unspoken message is clear: you&#8217;re old, and it&#8217;s time to leave.
