{"id":176,"date":"2010-10-06T00:53:08","date_gmt":"2010-10-05T22:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/premesso.newcontrarian.com\/?p=176"},"modified":"2010-10-06T00:53:08","modified_gmt":"2010-10-05T22:53:08","slug":"the-chinese-in-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/premesso.com\/?p=176","title":{"rendered":"Immigration is Not Zero-Sum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"burba's role in the iraq\/nigeria uraniam lies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.historycommons.org\/entity.jsp?entity=elisabetta_burba\" target=\"_blank\">Elisabetta Burba<\/a> had a <a title=\"chinese in italy\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.panorama.it\/italia\/2010\/10\/10\/la-lunga-marcia-dei-cinesi-in-italia-vinceremo-noi\/\" target=\"_blank\">story in this week&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Panorama<\/em><\/a> on Italy&#8217;s Chinese population. \u00a0It&#8217;s really not bad writing in that it lists many success stories and is generally favorable. \u00a0It includes details I didn&#8217;t know, such as a quote from one expat Chinese saying that &#8220;the Filipinos will work under a boss, but we all want to have our own business, be our own boss&#8221; &#8212; something any red-blooded Italian should take heart with. \u00a0But before I get too giddy handing out the accolades, I should say that the print version includes maps of five different city streets and store-by-store diagrams indicating which businesses are foreign-owned. \u00a0This is an issue, especially when coupled with making note that the particular Chinese who come to Italy are called &#8220;China&#8217;s Jews.&#8221; Perhaps not intentional, but tasteless at best, as were the cover (see graphic) and at least part of the title (&#8220;We Were Evicted &#8212; We&#8217;ll Win&#8221; &#8212; why must someone lose, Chinese or Italian?). \u00a0 Hard to find online, but <a title=\"text of la panorama story\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rassegnastampa.comune.roma.it\/View.aspx?ID=2010100716780485\" target=\"_blank\">here&#8217;s<\/a> a terribly-formatted version.
