Republishing this for the 103rd anniversary of Armistice Day —<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s not only the 100th anniversary of Armistice, now Veterans, Day, it’s also San Martino, an autumnal feast day in Italy that celebrates not only the fourth-century patron saint of beggars, but also the maturation of new wines. The great Giosu\u00e8 Carducci also wrote a poem describing a typical foggy fall day around this time of the year in northern Italy, which deserves quoting in full and in the original.<\/p>\n

San Martino<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

La nebbia a gl’irti<\/sup>\u00a0colli
\npiovigginando sale,
\ne sotto il maestrale<\/sup>
\nurla e biancheggia il mar;<\/p>\n

ma per le vie del borgo
\ndal ribollir de’ tini<\/sup>
\nva l’aspro odor de i vini
\nl’anime a rallegrar.<\/p>\n

Gira su’ ceppi accesi
\nlo spiedo scoppiettando:
\nsta il cacciator fischiando
\nsu l’uscio a rimirar<\/p>\n

tra le rossastre nubi<\/sup>
\nstormi d’uccelli neri,

Carducci moved to Bologna at age 25, where he surely became acquainted with the pervasive northern Italian nebbia<\/em>, which gets more intense the closer one goes to the Po.<\/p>\n

While there, he lived on via Broccaindoso, where, it bears mentioning, there is a pretty decent osteria<\/a>, if you’re in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
