{"id":1224,"date":"2016-01-27T20:59:22","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T20:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/premesso.com\/?p=1224"},"modified":"2018-09-14T04:48:11","modified_gmt":"2018-09-14T04:48:11","slug":"literary-lunches-rebecca-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/premesso.com\/?p=1224","title":{"rendered":"Literary Lunches: Rebecca West"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Today we&#8217;ll kick off what will hopefully be a literary lunch series, in which I&#8217;ll showcase a (usually)\u00a0simple meal from a great book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/premesso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/clip_image010_0000.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1229\" src=\"http:\/\/premesso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/clip_image010_0000.jpg\" alt=\"Black Lamb &amp; Grey Falcon\" width=\"234\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #222222;\">All I had time for today was a quick lunch &#8212; a couple of slices of\u00a0<em>prosciutto di parma<\/em> (Citterio, aged 420 days, Trader Joe&#8217;s; $6.49 for 4 oz.) on a leftover hunk of <em>p<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><em>ain de campagne<\/em> (<a title=\"Good bread in northern Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/leonorabakery.com\/www.leonorabakery.com\/Our_Products_-_Breads.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leonora&#8217;s<\/a>; de-thawed free &#8220;sympathy loaf&#8221; given to me the day before <a title=\"King of the Snowstorms... not really\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/capital-weather-gang\/wp\/2016\/01\/21\/poll-name-this-winter-storm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snowzilla<\/a>). This spartan lunch reminded me of Dragutin, Rebecca West&#8217;s chauffeur in the <a title=\"Read here -- West's Black Lamb mega-travelogue\" href=\"http:\/\/www.promacedonia.org\/en\/rw\/rw_kaimak.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Macedonia chapter<\/a> of <em>Black Lamb, Grey Falcon<\/em>. All I&#8217;m missing is some good Hungarian, or better, Serbian paprika.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the step of the automobile Dragutin sat and ate his lunch between the two young soldiers, who had the dutiful and dedicated look I have noticed so often in Yugoslav conscripts. His lunch was, as always, ascetic and chosen in accordance with the principles of sympathetic magic: he liked lean meat and rough black bread and paprika, and he regarded as weakening all soft and slippery things like butter and kaymak and sardines.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Certainly no sardines on my sandwich.
